How to Solve Woodpecker Problems

Here are some great ideas for possibly solving your woodpecker problems! In some areas of the United States, woodpeckers are themselves considered to be both a nuisance and an irritant.  They drill holes into wooden house frames in search of food, to call a mate, or to build a nest.  Sometimes they peck at the metal flashing around chimneys, creating a sound that can be heard for blocks.

As strange as this may sound, one way to possibly reduce the problem is to add a woodpecker feeder to your yard.  This can give woodpeckers another option for food and give them another place to drill (instead of your house).

Woodpecker-Feeder.com has devised suet feeding systems that feed  woodpeckers and other 'clinging' birds (with an occasional visit from a very smart starling).  Loading the feeder with our recommended woodpecker suet will attract woodpeckers in no time at all.

Another option is to install a woodpecker nesting box.  There are a variety of nesting box solutions out there, but the best seems to be one with an inward sloping face so non-clinging birds can not easily enter the nesting port.  A good nesting box will give woodpeckers a place to nest in your neighborhood instead of trying to peck their way into your house.  Granted, this could attract woodpeckers to your area, but if you already have woodpeckers and they are creating a problem, why not give this a try?
